From Chaos to Calm: The Magic of Savasana in Kids Yoga

Why stillness matters - even if it doesn’t look perfect

In a kids yoga class, there’s often giggling, wriggling, and roaring, and we love that. Children express themselves through movement and noise, so our sessions are designed to meet that energy with play, joy, and curiosity.

But then something beautiful happens.

At the end of class, we slow it all down. We invite stillness.
It’s time for savasana, or, as we sometimes call it, 'rest time' or 'floating on a cloud'.

And yes… most of the time, toes still wiggle. Eyes peek open. Someone whispers.
And that’s okay. Because savasana for children isn’t about lying perfectly still.

Why We Include Savasana in Every Class

1. It Teaches the Value of Rest
We’re often told to “keep going”, but learning to pause is just as important. Savasana helps children practise being still, quiet, and inward. Even a few seconds can be powerful.

2. It Helps the Nervous System Settle
After big movements and big feelings, the body needs time to recalibrate. Resting at the end of class helps children feel grounded and safe.

3. It Builds Self-Awareness
Lying down quietly invites kids to check in with their bodies and emotions. They begin to notice: “I feel calm now.” “My heart is beating slower.” “I like how my body feels when I rest.”

4. It Models Healthy Habits
By making rest a natural part of yoga, we show children that stillness isn’t a punishment - it’s a gift.

For Grown-Ups Watching:

You might wonder if it’s “working” when your child fidgets or doesn’t close their eyes.
But it is.

The environment you’ve helped create, where rest is safe, normal, and shared, will stay with them, even if they don’t show it outwardly. Over time, stillness becomes easier.

And honestly?
Most adults find savasana hard too. That’s why we practise it.

How We Make Savasana Special in Kids Yoga

🧸 Soft breathing toys or teddies on their tummies
🌈 Guided stories like floating on clouds or resting under stars
🎵 Gentle music or singing bowls
💗 Calming touch or optional forehead stones

These small touches create a moment of peace that children begin to look forward to - a quiet landing after their wild, wonderful adventure.

At The Little Yoga Glow, rest isn’t the reward at the end - it’s part of the journey.
It’s a space to feel, breathe, and be.
And in a noisy world, that’s a little bit magical.
